It is important to change your filter every month so that you can prolong the life of your HVAC unit, but which filter should you use. Here is a helpful guide to the different kinds of filters out there and a small segment on what HVAC professionals recommend as the best filter to use.
Types of HVAC Filters
Fiberglass Filters:

Description: These basic filters are made of layered fiberglass.
Pros: Affordable and easy to find.
Cons: They capture larger particles but may not be effective against smaller allergens.
Pleated Filters:

Description: Made from polyester or cotton, these filters have a pleated design that increases surface area.
Pros: More effective at capturing dust, pollen, and other particles. They typically have a higher MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value).
Cons: Slightly more expensive than fiberglass filters.
HEPA Filters:

Description: High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are designed to trap 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger.
Pros: Excellent for allergy sufferers and those concerned about indoor air quality.
Cons: Can restrict airflow if not properly matched to the system, and often require professional installation.
Electrostatic Filters:

Description: These filters use static electricity to attract and capture particles.
Pros: Reusable and effective at capturing smaller particles.
Cons: Require regular cleaning and can be more expensive upfront.
Recommended Filter
HVAC professionals often recommend pleated filters for their balance of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. They provide good filtration without significantly restricting airflow, making them suitable for most residential systems. It is important to stay with in the correct MERV rating for the residential HVAC (8-13). Anything over 13 can put strain on the system.
