With spring in full swing, everyone’s eager to get their hands in the dirt and add some fresh greenery to their gardens! As a home Inspector I see too many beautiful plants causing havoc on a home. From the debris on the roof to the roots lifting the foundation, it is important when we go through our spring planting that we think about the long term health of the plant and its effects on our home. In Florida, planting plants away from your home is a simple but smart choice that helps keep your property happy and healthy. While it's lovely to have greenery around, it's essential to think about the long-term benefits of placing plants at the right distance from your house.

One of the biggest reasons to keep plants away from your home is to protect the foundation. Florida's hot, rainy climate can be tough on structures, and the last thing you want is for plant roots to cause damage. Many plants, especially trees and large shrubs, have roots that spread far and wide. If planted too close to your home, those roots can sneak their way into your foundation, causing cracks or even shifting the structure over time. Additionally, plant roots can interfere with your drainage system, leading to water buildup around your house, which might result in mold and mildew problems inside.
Another reason to plant away from your home is to keep pests at bay. Florida is home to a variety of critters, like ants and termites, that love to take shelter near plants. If plants are too close to your house, pests might find their way into your home and cause damage. By planting away from your house, you help create a natural barrier, keeping unwanted visitors at a distance.

So, how far away from your home should you plant? As a general rule of thumb, keep smaller plants at least 12 inches from the house to allow for easy maintenance and airflow. For trees, aim for about 10 feet. It’s also a good idea to research the specific growth patterns and root systems of your plants so you can plan accordingly and avoid future headaches.
With this in mind by planting your greenery a little further from your home, you can enjoy all the beauty and benefits of Florida’s lush landscape without worrying about the negative effects of plant roots, moisture, and pests. It’s an easy way to help your home stay in tip-top shape, so you can relax and enjoy the sunshine without a care in the world!
